Artist Statement

Born and raised in Flower City Canton—where blossoms grace every season, ever-green greenery endures year-round, and the renowned Spring Flower Fair draws acclaim at home and abroad—I have been immersed in a uniquely rich natural and cultural environment. Horticulture is woven into the very soul of every Cantonnese, myself included. To me, gardening is a devotional journey through the four seasons: far more than mere planting of vegetation, it is a ritual of deep communion with all living things and the cosmos.

I have been fortunate to work in the horticultural profession for twenty years. With birds and flowers as my brush and ink, I have painted a vibrant, unfolding panorama upon the earth—no static canvas, but a dynamic narrative co-authored with nature itself. From the perspective of artistic creation, horticulture also nourishes inspiration beyond the confines of the profession. It serves as a springboard for extending art into reflections on past times and spaces, giving rise to scholarly writings and articles. It likewise informs the production of equally dynamic music videos, where I provide professional insights to ensure each page and frame becomes a space where nature and culture intimately entwine.

Artistic Achievement

Leveraging his professional skills and extensive experience, Borgart Lui’s horticultural works—rendered in a distinctive artistic style—are widely admired. His creations include: Classical-style gardens, such as the indoor exhibition garden “Yuyin Shanfang” at The Museum of Chinese Gardens and Landscape Architecture in Beijing; Rural revitalization projects, for example the restoration and redesign of the Liantang Ancient Village in Luogang, Canton; Urban park landscaping, including major plantings and landscape design at the Foshan Botanical Garden. Beyond horticulture, he has also made significant contributions in related fields. He served as the cultural-history consultant for the Southern Television documentary “Hundred Flowers Tomb”, which won the First Prize in Television Literature at the 2021 Guangdong Province Broadcasting & TV Program Awards.
