CHAK CHUN LAM

Painter / Hong Kong

ABOUT

Chak Chun Lam is a Hong Kong painter born on 11th October 1982. He liked to read books about science and astronomy when he was very young. As a kid, he enjoyed visiting the local space museum. He was fascinated by the beautiful space photos taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope.

Inspired by the stories and dedication of great scientists such as Newton and Einstein, he dreamed of becoming a scientist. Although he couldn't become a professional scientist when he grew up, his wonder and awe towards science has never diminished.

In addition to reading, he enjoys collecting beautiful gems and mineral specimens from around the world and capturing the mysterious microworlds in his collection through photos. He received a diploma in fine arts from the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2014. Prior to that, he received a bachelor degree in engineering from the faculty of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2004. When not painting, he is a software engineer.

He joined Global Artists Committee of Asian Art Association In 2020.

statement

Science tells us that everything is connected and has a common origin. Regardless of our differences in race, religion, and political ideology, scientific understandings will remind us that we are the same fragile and precious biological species, living on a small piece of dust in the vast cosmic ocean. Therefore, we should learn to treasure and embrace everyone in a kind and generous way, because we are so precious and rare in the universe.

Whenever I contemplate this cosmic perspective, I am amazed. To express my wonder and awe, I chose nebulae and gems as the painting subjects. Nebulae are interstellar clouds of dust and gas, such as the Orion Nebula, which are far away from us in outer space. A gem is a piece of mineral crystal that formed on the earth millions or a billion years ago, such as diamonds and sapphires.

Nebulae and gems were formed millions or billions of years ago. These objects are some of the oldest scientific research topics. For me, nebulae and gems are natural time capsules. They are the timeless expression of nature’s beauty.

Scientific discoveries such as nebulae and gems also have intrinsic beauty. Their authenticity has stood the test of time. After hundreds of years of experimental testing and verification, Newton's law of gravity and Einstein's theory of relativity still shine. Scientific knowledge has transcended generations and crossed cultural boundaries, laying a solid foundation for us to solve the problems and challenges in the 21st century.

May science give us wisdom and guide us towards the path of love and peace.
