Chung Yi Chieh

ABOUT
Born in 1969, Chung Yi Chieh changed his path to Photography when he was a computer science major university student. After graduation from Department of Graphic Communication and Digital Publishing, Shih Hsin University, he has worked as a photojournalist in Independent Morning Post for 5 years.
Chung Yi Chieh felt the need to absorb more knowledge in Social Science and Humanities when he served as a staff photographer in China Times. To achieve this goal, he decided to study Sociology in Graduate Institute for Social Transformation studies, Shih Hsin University. At the same year he joined Reuters and later worked as Chief Photographer in Reuters Taiwan Branch.
To immerse deeper in research and teaching, Chung Yi Chieh left Reuters and went for his PHD study in National Taiwan University and National Chengchi University. In this period, he taught Sociology and Communication in National Chengchi University and National Taiwan University of Arts.
Meanwhile he worked as a Director of documentary in Da Ai Television. Documentary production has incorporated into his passion of images and inquiry of visual sociology.
He also devoted himself to social services, such as being Secretary- General of Taiwan Press Photographer Association, Counselor of Department of International Communication, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and so on. He planned and edit the photo book “Health in Taiwan,” published in 2002.
Chung Yi Chieh has curated and exhibited in “Dissection: Doctor-Patient Relationship” in 2001, “Images of Labor” in 2002, and “Images of Brew: Labor Culture in Taipei Brewery” in 2005. He was awarded the first prize of Portrait in Taiwan Press Photo Contest in 2007.
In 2006 Chung Yi Chieh directed the documentary " Dance with images,” depicting the formation of habitus and taste of Taiwan's photojournalists after 1949. The PTS documentary "In Their Teens" he produced was nominated for the Taipei Film Festival and the Golden Harvest Awards in 2021.
He was invited in Global Artist Committee of Asian Art Association in June 2021. He also served as a judge of the 2022 & 2023 "Asian Press Photo".
