ABOUT
Guo Xuejun, a famous guzheng player and educator, is an associate professor of Shanghai Conservatory of Music. She is the artistic advisor of Shanghai Chaozhou National Orchestra. She graduated from Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 1965 and was the soloist of Shanghai National Orchestra, and was transferred to Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 1987 to teach guzheng full-time. She has accumulated rich stage experience and teaching experience during her long performance career, and has gradually formed her own subtle, delicate and unique artistic style. She has held many solo concerts and has been invited to perform and lecture all over the world.
Guo Xuejun was invited in Global Artist Committee of Asian Art Association in May 2022 and to be a judge of World Guzheng Competition 2022.
Performance Achievements
Professor Guo Xuejun has been a member of the jury for many times in major national events such as the Golden Bell Award, and was awarded the Outstanding Gardener Award by the Ministry of Culture and the China Music Association.
In 1982, he introduced "Chaozhou Music" for Radio Shanghai, and recorded a group of Chaozhou zheng songs, such as "Jackdaw Playing in the Water", "Girl's Complaint" and "A Little Gold".
In 1986, she wrote a paper entitled "Soft, Elegant and Wonderful - Introducing the Artistic Characteristics of Zhejiang Zheng School", which was used by Shanghai People's Broadcasting Station, and she recorded a set of solo pieces of Zhejiang Zheng School, such as "High Mountain and Flowing Water", "Four Harmonies as You Wish", "General's Order", "High Moon", "Hai Qing Takes the Swan", "The King Unloads His Armor" and "Lin Chong Runs at Night", which was broadcasted by Shanghai People's Broadcasting Station for two hours. He has published many papers in professional journals such as "Chinese Music" and "Music Lovers", such as "Wang Xunzhi and the Zhejiang Zheng School", "The Same Origin and Different Branches, the Struggle for Excellence - On the Guzheng School" and "The Artistic Life of Mr. Guo Ying". Published a cassette entitled "Top Ten Folk Songs" with Ren Tongxiang, Min Huifen and Yu Xunfa, and performed "The Crow Plays in the Water". Published the cassette "Chinese ancient style ocarina, zheng, qin and xiao masterpieces" with Kong Qingbao, Gong Yi and Dai Shuhong, and performed "The King Unloads His Armor" and "High Mountain Flowing Water". Published a solo CD album "Yang Liu Chun Feng" with about ten pieces of music.
She has adapted a dozen of pieces such as "Spring Breeze of Yang Liu", "The King Discharges His Armor", "The Red Star Shines", "Three Blossoms of the Plum Blossom", "Purple Bamboo Tune", etc., which were included in "Chinese Guzheng Masterpieces", "Guzheng Classics" and "Chinese Guzheng Exam Collection". The monographs "Learn Guzheng for Youth", "Guzheng Classics", "Learn Guzheng Well", "Chinese Traditional Zither (Chaozhou Zither, Henan Zither, Shandong Zither, Hakka Zither, Zhejiang Zither) Performance Technique" and "Guzheng Exam Collection of Shanghai Conservatory" were published by Shanghai Music Publishing House and Nanjing Audio and Video Publishing House respectively, and Shanghai People's Radio and Shantou People's Radio have broadcasted Guo Xuejun's performance art and artistic career for many times. In 2015, she was awarded the "Outstanding Achievement Award of Chinese Guzheng Art" by the Guzheng Society of China Musicians Association.
Educational Achievement
Professor Guo Xuejun's teaching is rigorous and standardized, and has trained a large number of professional talents: Luo Xiaozhi, a guzheng player who is now the director of the Shanghai National Orchestra; Xu Hui, Associate Principal of Singapore Chinese Orchestra Guzheng and Instructor of Guzheng at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts; Wu Fang, a guzheng player who is active in the Tokyo music scene and actively promotes traditional Chinese music, etc., all of whom are now the stars of the world music stage.
