John Battalgazi

Illustrator / Japan

ABOUT

John is an artist based in Tokyo Japan. His work is currently being showcased in galleries both in Japan and the USA. He makes art out of simple shapes and apply depth and texture to make unique aesthetically pleasing works in a style that is very much my own. His main inspiration is late 19th / early 20th Century design although he spend more time creating than viewing.

John‘s artistic presence is by and large manifested online. He has been featured by Adobe’s Behance platform and his art has graced the cover of the biggest selling arts related magazine in China. Duzhe (Readers Magazine). He has also been commissioned to produce art for major clients such as Apple for use on their App Store.

John was invited in Global Artist Committee of Asian Art Association in August 2022.

Artist Statement

I used to study art but not digitally. I was more of a classical bent eschewing the Mac and mouse for more traditional tools. Started doing stuff on my iPad at the end of 2015 and realised touch screens now allow for more naturalistic digital art.

Having lived in Tokyo since 2007 I have been influenced by a lot of Meiji and Edo styles such as Ukiyo-e and traditional geometric patterns that can be seen on Japanese textiles.

A lot of my favourite European art from the early 1900s also reference the beautiful simplicity of this traditional work. As evidenced in my output I also like to reference these concepts while maintaining my own distinct style. I believe an artist's output is an amalgamation of all the influences they are moved by and the job of the artist is to bring something new into the world or else it's just a decoration.

Clients

His art was recently featured on the cover of the bi-monthly Chinese Readers Magazine which has one of the largest circulations in the world. Due to his recent focus on sports related art particularly in America he has some famous clients in the baseball world, including a prominent influencer who featured his art on his social media channel and some current and former Major League baseball players as well as an assistant GM of one San Diego based major league franchise who showcases his art in the office and around the stadium.
