Jyotsna S Kumar

Abstract Artist / Singapore

About

Jyotsna is a Singapore-based abstract expressionist artist inspired by the beauty of everyday moments. From the rhythmic motions of chores to the interplay of light and shadow, she transforms fleeting, imperfect experiences into dynamic abstract compositions. Her art explores resilience, renewal, and growth through layered forms, lines, and textures, with every piece telling a unique story that invites personal interpretation.

Working primarily with acrylics and mixed media, Jyotsna‘s process-driven approach emphasizes experimentation, elimination, and spontaneity. Guided by emotion and a keen sense of visual balance, her works pulse with energy and rhythm, creating a harmonious interplay of depth and dynamism. She views art as an evolving exchange between the artist, the viewer, and the present moment. Fascinated by the interplay of materials, colors, and moods, she continuously experiments with layering, deconstructing, and rediscovering, allowing unexpected elements to emerge from beneath the surface. Her paintings feel alive, shaped by movement and transformation, embracing the unpredictability that makes each piece a dynamic, organic experience.

A graduate in Fine Arts from Stella Maris College, India, and trained in
Western Abstract painting at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA),
Singapore, Jyotsna has exhibited at venues such as The Arts House, ION Art Gallery, and TAG@TPD in Singapore, as well as internationally. Her work is in the homes of private collectors in Singapore, the Philippines, the USA, and India.

In addition to her artistic practice, Jyotsna is an art educator with 20 years of experience, inspiring students to explore the boundless possibilities of abstract expressionism. She believes in art’s transformative power to nurture creativity and self-expression.

Jyotsna’s art reflects her journey of self-discovery, weaving together patterns inspired by nature and the poetry of daily life. Each piece is an invitation to find balance and renewal amidst life’s challenges. Her upcoming projects continue to push the boundaries of material exploration, embracing spontaneity and the surprises that emerge within layers, reinforcing her belief that art is a fluid, ever-evolving process.

In January 2025, she was invited to join the Asian Art Association Singapore (Traditional Painting).

Artist Statement

My art is a visceral response to the world's overlooked beauty—the poetry in mundane tasks, the dance of shapes, hues, and layers. Through abstract expressionism, I distill these elements into emotive compositions.

There’s something about the process that puts me in a state of flow, where I can let go of life’s distractions and just be. Each stroke is an exploration of raw emotion, guided by intuition and spontaneity. I capture the essence of fleeting moments, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the energy and rhythm of my creations.

By embracing the ordinary and elevating it to the extraordinary, I aim to ignite a sense of wonder and connection in those who engage with my work. My creativity comes from the heart with my unique vision; I hope to inspire others to see the world around them in a new and exciting light.

“When you teach what you love and share what you know, you open the eyes, minds, hearts, and souls to unexplored worlds”.
