Liu Lei started learning guzheng at the age of 6. She was admitted to Yiwu Art School at a young age. She studied under Wang Gangqiang, the former president of Zhejiang Guzheng Association, and graduated from Zhejiang Media College. During her primary and secondary school years, she participated in Yiwu Primary and Secondary School Art Festival competitions many times and won the tenth-level excellent certificate issued by Zhejiang Guzheng Association. In 2005, she was automatically absorbed as a third-level member by Zhejiang Province and was promoted to the art class of Xiuhu Middle School. During college, she was recommended by professional teacher Li Xinhan to work at Hangzhou New Century Music School in 2011, and was later recommended to Hangzhou to teach Guzheng at Hangzhou Yiran Music School for 3 years, with rich teaching experience. In 2016, she returned to Yiwu to open a guzheng studio, and in 2019, she reviewed Yiwu Mingyue Art Training Co., Ltd.

In January 2025, she was invited to join the Asian Art Association Singapore (Chinese Traditional Instruments).
