About

Huailiang Cai is a Chinese artist whose work reflects a philosophical exploration of freedom, power, and the relationship between the individual and society. In 2011, he chose to drop out of school to pursue creative freedom, rejecting institutional constraints. From 2011 to 2015, he worked as an independent designer and muralist before transitioning to self-taught art, employing a sociological perspective to explore the dialectical relationship between art and society through practice and residency programs.

In his early career, Cai’s work focused primarily on plein air painting, emphasizing direct observation of nature. However, the societal upheavals brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic prompted him to reconsider this approach, which he found insufficient to address the essence of reality. Since then, he has shifted his creative focus to exploring the deep connections between individual psychology and the external world, redefining art as a tool for understanding and transforming reality.

In December 2024, he was invited to join the Asian Art Association Singapore (Painting).

Artist Statement

Since 2022, I have been exploring the integration of daily artistic practice with social issues through artistic interventions, aiming to create a profound dialogue between the individual and society. My works serve as a bridge between personal experience and social reality, functioning not only as aesthetic expressions but also as a redefinition and transcendence of the world’s boundaries.

My creative journey reflects an unwavering pursuit of freedom, introspection, and the transformative power of art.
