Song Shirui

Young Guzheng Player / China

About

Song Shirui studied the guzheng from a young age, under the guidance of young guzheng player Wang Rong. She was carefully supervised by professors Wu Qing and Shu Shunping and was admitted to Sichuan Conservatory of Music in 2024, where she has studied under Professor Lin Yi. During my undergraduate years, I participated in multiple domestic and international art practices, winning second prize in instrumental music at the 2020 University Art Exhibition, silver medal in the professional category at the 2021 Dunhuang Cup Beijing National Instrument Competition, and gold medal at the 15th Singapore International Guzheng Art Festival.

In March 2025, she was invited to join the Asian Art Association Singapore (Chinese Traditional Instruments).

Artist Statement

In the context of globalization, I use the guzheng as a medium to fulfill two great missions:

Within: Upholding the cultural genes of traditional music through academic research and field investigations, we trace the evolution of the guzheng genre, infusing classics with new interpretive dimensions.

Externally: Break free from the stereotypical notions of Orientalism and showcase the contemporary vitality of Chinese music through international tours, cross-cultural compositions (such as dialogues with Indian sitar and Arab Udqin), and integrations with AI.
In the future, I will continue to delve into the construction of the guzheng improvisation system, such as the digital dissemination of intangible cultural heritage and research on its healing functions, exploring the multiple possibilities of traditional instruments in art, technology, and society, making guzheng sound a link between the heart and the world.
