Su Jiuling

Hand-painted Oil Painter / China

About

Su Jiuling (b. 1988, Dalian, Liaoning, China) hails from a multi-generational family of painters whose ancestors created murals for temples and Taoist shrines. Immersed in traditional art from childhood, this Capricorn artist with an INFJ personality embodies quiet introspection and meticulous focus, steadfastly pursuing his artistic path for decades.

In 2007, he enrolled in the Fine Arts Department of Liaoning Normal University. The following year, he embarked on international studies at the Repin Institute of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, Russia, receiving rigorous academic training. From 2010 to 2015, he continued his education at the San Francisco Art Institute’s oil painting department, where multicultural exposure catalyzed the development of his unique visual language. Seven years of training across Russia and America forged works combining technical precision with conceptual freedom.

Since 2012, Su has centered his practice on the "Plaything" motif, evolving it through seven distinct series. These doll-like figures serve as vessels for childhood memories and metaphors for adult emotional landscapes. Masterful in mixed media yet specializing in hand-painted oils, his works conjure psychological spaces between dream and reality through warm palettes and theatrical compositions.

Currently serving as Deputy Secretary-General of the Art Committee (Southeast Asia Chapter) at the Western Returned Scholars Association, Su actively promotes cross-cultural artistic dialogue. His practice transcends personal narrative, weaving Eastern spirituality with Western conceptualism into a tapestry of cultural exchange.

In March 2025, he was invited to join the Asian Art Association Singapore (Traditional Painting).

Artist Statement

I admire pure painters—Cézanne, Vermeer, Freud, Bacon. Yet I draw inspiration widely: Picasso, da Vinci, Richter, Manet, Rembrandt, Repin, even masters from other fields—Kurosawa, Godard, Kubrick, Yamamoto, Moriyama, Mi Fu, Su Dongpo, Michael Jackson, Jordan. Beyond artworks, I’m fascinated by artists themselves—their philosophies, attitudes, their very being. A true artist should themselves be a work of art; creations emerge from the creator.

Throughout my career, I’ve never chased styles, movements, or trends. Style emerges naturally; era-specificity needs no pursuit. Movements are for art historians, trends mere fast food for the immature. Time judges fairly. Across eras and borders, work quality remains the sole criterion.

I absorb artistic nutrients like a sponge, metabolizing them into personal language. I resist categorization—that’s for posthumous labels. Observation, love, sincerity: these are art’s essential elements. The rest? Distractions.

My current *Chess King’s Divine Realm* series explores relationships without subjective narration. Overusing adjectives narrows meaning, like writers forcing interpretations. While artists obsess over "self-expression," how much of that "self" holds real substance? I observe life like a dog, then tell the mirror: "Another dog." I present neutral visions—viewers will interpret through their own lenses anyway.

Storytellers aren’t true painters. I don’t narrate—I dissect objective realities: adjusting chroma, negotiating color relationships. My technique remains elementary: monochromatic sketches, base colors, gradual refinement. Jordan understood—his supreme skill was fundamentals. That’s why he’s basketball’s deity.

Rejecting markets and shortcuts, I paint stroke by stroke. Every pigment, brushwork, line receives full attention. Let the accumulation reveal its form. Ultimately, I care not for comparisons or legacies. If some good paintings emerge, that’s fortune enough.
