Li Yumeng
Fashion Designer / China
About
Li Yumeng holds a master’s degree in Fashion Design from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and economics from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). With this interdisciplinary background and a multifaceted design perspective, she founded her independent fashion label, YUN MOONMOON.
The brand explores the " conflict of beauty", blending dark romanticism, gender-neutral tailoring, narrative emotional expression, and punk influences to create a distinctive artistic language. At its core, the label focuses on the creative reuse of sustainable materials—including recycled fabrics, vintage flea-market garments, and biodegradable yarns—combined with artisanal techniques such as embroidery, weaving, crochet, textile construction, natural dyeing, screen printing, and 3D draping. Each piece emphasizes the profound connection between craftsmanship and emotion.
Li Yumeng believes that creativity stems from flexible thinking, imagination, emotional experiences, and critical thinking shaped by unique perspectives. She draws inspiration from life experiences, emotional observations, and intellectual exploration, utilizing ChatGPT and Midjourney for initial concept development and refinement. Skilled in material experimentation and structural reconstruction, she refines garment silhouettes through toile prototyping and collaborates closely with patternmakers and suppliers to ensure impeccable quality and execution. Additionally, the brand actively integrates AI-generated design and digital fashion tools to enhance efficiency and optimize production workflows.
In May 2025, she was invited to join the Asian Art Association Singapore (Costume Art).
Artist Statement
I am an interdisciplinary fashion designer exploring the aesthetics of conflict and the beauty of reconstruction. To me, fashion transcends mere adornment—it is emotional expression, identity formation, and a vital dialogue with society.
My practice deconstructs gender binaries, articulates emotional complexity, and visualizes the interplay between rupture and renewal. Dark romanticism, punk subversion, gender-neutral tailoring, and surrealist storytelling converge in my work, forming a language of crafted tension—where wounds and healing coexist.
Working predominantly with recycled textiles, discarded garments, and biodegradable yarns, I employ hand-weaving, embroidery, crochet, textile collage, and natural dyeing. These slow, tactile processes reintroduce human intimacy into fashion, revealing the narratives embedded in every stitch and seam.
Central to my ethos is social inclusivity and amplifying marginalized voices. Through wearable art, I bridge personal catharsis with collective memory, creating garments that become vessels for emotional reclamation and identity empowerment.
