Dr. Chua Chee Lay

Chairman of the Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning
Singapore

We live in the internet era headphones and computers are available everywhere, and typing has almost replaced handwriting. We live in a world where one may type hundreds or thousands of words a day, but rarely write write two. It is my great fear that the ability to write and draw with pen and paper will fade over time, So that fewer and fewer people can write well. And I’m concerned that the early proliferation of typewriters, especially in the west, has reduced focus on handwriting in school. Yet, research in neuroscience continues to remind us of the importance of handwriting in learning and in processing.

We must not regret the basic skills of writing and drawing. It is thus my hope that handwriting and hand-drawing newspapers will re-ignite that love for pen and paper, and increase our abilities to learn and to process.

In particular, I hope the theme “My Singapore My Love”, will inspire you to research, to write and to pioneer innovative ways to present the knowledge you discover. I look forward to seeing your beautiful illustrations, intricate typography and exciting prose, in that familiar yet often neglected format of the newspaper page.

Kateryna Zelenko

Ambassador of Ukraine to Singapore

Today Ukraine is resisting the Russian war of aggression. This is the largest threat to Ukraine’s existence since the restoration of its independence in 1991.

Russia’s unprovoked war has already destroyed and damaged a vast amount of the cultural heritage sites and pieces of art in Ukraine – the powerful elements of its national identity and history.

Supporting Ukraine through art is yet another testament to its power, which allows expressing one’s understanding and perception of the world, but also introduces essential changes around us.

Art is always presented or performed in a context and for a reason. We appreciate the efforts of the Asian Art Association of Singapore to put the initiative “Love and Peace: World Charity Painting Competition 2022” into a reasonable context and for the right reason. We are thankful to many people in Singapore and all around the world for doing their part for humanity.

Donations received by the Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Response fund of the Singapore Red Cross will make a difference in someone’s life, mitigating the plight and helping to overcome wartime difficulties.

In times of darkness, we need to support the light that refused to surrender.
