Scoring criteria and competition rules
- Performers in any category must play the number and duration of pieces specified for the competition, which may be by any composer chosen from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern era piano repertoire. Preludes and fugues are considered to be one work; consecutive works: e.g. sonatas, suites, etc. in any combination are considered to be one work.
- For entrants who participate in the Categories by Level, they must choose a work equivalent to each level (based on the degree of the ABRSM and Trinity College London) to be presented. In addition to two works of different styles and periods, any one or more works may be selected for performance.
- If a performer chooses to register twice for an examination performance, he/she should try to perform a completely different repertoire in order to get a better grade and to obtain the advice of a professional pianist judge.
- Competitors are required to record on a piano that has been tuned, but there is no limit to upright or grand pianos.
- Competitors are required to attach an electronic score (PDF format) of the published score of the piece of their choice to the application form, stating the name of the competitor and the category in which they are competing. If there is no published score, please provide a letter of consent from the composer.
- Judges will assess the difficulty of the piece, mastery of technique, musical expression and stage presence of the performer.
