Towards Freedom
Clarene Tan, Singapore
My artwork depicts a path, one that we all walk during this pandemic. This universal journey started with great suffering and losses, but as the entire world continues to push on, united in our fight against Covid-19, we have slowly but surely progressed. Hence, I painted colourful balloons symbolising hope carrying away difficult times. Meanwhile, a nurse at the bottom right corner represents the hard work and dedication which will eventually pave the way to freedom from the coronavirus. Lastly, I decided to paint the ocean reflecting the rising sun to illustrate a hopeful and bright future, as I believe that perseverance and hope will help humanity prevail over the virus. Dancing with the Light
Zhao Zhuoyin, Macau
The work is a three-person dance among citizens, police officers and health care workers to express the sentiment that there is always a rainbow after a storm, in order to encourage the public to keep their hope and welcome the light of day in the face of the epidemic. Even though the New Coronavirus is ravaging the world, as long as we have the perseverance and spirit to fight against the epidemic, the day will come when we can dance together after the epidemic, and the day will be full of colorful flowers. New Hope

The relentless spread of COVID19 has caused endless fear and worry among the general public. In response to the seemingly bleak situation, this painting extols the benevolence and selflessness of healthcare workers by depicting a scene of them being surrounded and supported by tropical flora commonly seen in Singapore. On the right is a self-written poem that expounds the meaning of the artwork: “Occupied with attending to patients in white uniforms, hopes ignited for the day when exuberance abounds. Orchids overcome the odds and blossom from ragged rocks, benevolence spreads like fragrant bougainvilleas sprout.” The poem means that healthcare workers are selflessly attending to patients and their spirit reassures the public that a happy and stable time is near. At the bottom, the orchids that emerged from the rocks epitomize everyone who has overcome the odds and has the courage to live a meaningful life to combat the pandemic. At the top, bougainvilleas are spatially farther away, representing hopes for the future, and their palpable fragrance is just like the noble heart of healthcare workers. Then artwork adopted Chinese ink and pigments, combining the colouring techniques in both eastern and western drawings, to highlight a more detailed scene of healthcare workers attending to the patients. Flowers and rocks are dealt with in a similar way. Noticeable use of the transparency and fluidity in watercolor paintings are seen in petals and rocks, whereas leaves and the edges of rocks are blended with layers of titanium white to give a sense of layers, space and volume. In contrast, no noticeable black ink is used in leaves, so that flowers and leaves appear elegant when juxtaposed, which in turn highlights the heavy use of ink in the health-worker scene. In terms of layout, bougainvilleas and orchids complement and enhance each other, both of which are of a similar size as the health-worker scene in the middle. The equal size used for the 3 main parts is intended to deliver the message that the romance of blossoms is equal to the benevolence of health workers. No matter how life may seem to be easily crumbled in face of the pandemic, we ought to extol benevolent hearts, selfless acts and holy spirits. By their side, flowers abound. May we all have a peaceful and happy life in the near future.

My hometown is near the sea, and my hometown is represented by a seahorse, so I painted a seahorse to represent that I live in Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia.
New Hope
Yang Kaiqing, China
This work was created for a girl living in the Cameroon region of Africa, and this is a portrait of her. She loves lemon green and dreams of becoming a doctor. The Cameroon region is very ethnically and culturally diverse, with over 200 languages and ethnic groups. But life here is not easy, people are threatened by unrest on a daily basis. Even though these children, who are not very different from me in age, live in such a difficult environment, they still have hope and love for life and are determined to live their dreams. Their origins and location limit their space to realize their dreams, and I hope I can help these children realize their dreams in another way through my brush. I hope that I can help these children realize their dreams in another way through my brush, by storing their positive, uplifting side on this paper. I also hope that my paintings can bring them new hope and aspirations for life.
Ascent Towards Hope
Dayeon Han, South Korea
Earth is dying and the words “New Hope” inspire me to dream of an alternative world full of naturally sustained landscapes that are difficult to find in the world we live in today. To portray my hopes for a new world, I used several stairways to symbolize the hopeful ascent towards a better future, which is shown through the series of floating doors that lead to well-preserved nature. The concept of striving for new hope is also reinforced by the blue green palette based on the universally accepted visualization of our planet and hands reaching towards a more habitable world in the foreseeable future. The Guides
Chen Qianqian, Singapore
I drew Singapore's signature HDB, with a river separating the town. I drew a few front line workers in their protective suits, guiding people on the boat across the lake and towards the horizon. In the midst of the pandemic, the front line workers are the ones who are constantly battling the pandemic, trying to win the battle with Covid. Thus, at the end of the horizon, I drew fireworks and joyous celebration, people mask-free and gathering in large groups. This is to symbolise a new beginning that the front line workers are guiding us to. Art medium: Fabric canvas, Acrylic paint Size :50cmx70cm (San Yi Cultural, SG)

This painting is based on an oil painting frame and painted with acrylic paint. The fairy in the picture is in the dark, but she is holding a pearl in her hand. The light beams around her body represent the lights of the city, and the stars in the sky also represent hope in the dark. There is a heart full of hope in everyone's heart. Hope is the magnificent sunrise of life. We forge ahead in the dark to open up our path in life.
