OVERVIEW
Hanyu Pinyin (Hànyǔ Pīnyīn), a modern standard Mandarin phonetic scheme using the Latin alphabet, is the international standard specification for modern standard Mandarin romanization. Hanyu Pinyin is used comprehensively in mainland China and Singapore as part of basic education and is an important part of compulsory education. Overseas, especially in regions where Modern Standard Mandarin is commonly used such as Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines and Chinatown in the United States, Hanyu Pinyin is now also taught in Mandarin education. In Taiwan, the principle of using Mandarin transliteration has also adopted Hanyu Pinyin since 2008.
