Artist Statement

My first understanding of photography came from Lu Nan. When I was a child, I was shocked when I saw Lu Nan's series of mental patients. At that time, I didn't express my feelings, but just marveled at the work done by the photographer and the social responsibilities he could bear. But I didn’t start my photography career at that time. It was exactly that year when I chose a major at the university. I learned that the photography major of Anhui Normal University was opened. This was the fourth photography major in the country. Destined to be in the dark, I chose the path of photography.

I have tried various photography in the process of learning, but I first excluded commercial photography because I am very interested in social history and culture. I hope my photos will have historical significance. At that time, I was very interested. I admire photographers like Capa and Li Zhensheng.

I went to many remote areas to take a lot of documentary photos. At that time, I was satisfied and confused. An accidental photo touched me a lot. It was a photo taken on the day of "911". The plane in the distance was about to crash into the Petronas Twin Towers, while the people nearby were basking in the sun and chatting without knowing it. Is there objectivity and authenticity? If I'm not sure, then everything I've done seems to lack meaning.

So I began to turn to art theory to find the root of the emergence of photography. During that period, Dadaism and Surrealism were popular. I was amazed by this art form. Man Ray had a great influence on me. Man Ray is an important representative of the Surrealist movement. It gave up objectively existing static images and turned to create dream images. This is the earliest conceptual photography. This form breaks the shackles of reality and expresses the real. Inner value, although I am not sure whether it is out of the essence of "photography", I think this is what I want to do.

My creative process is very similar to Breton’s automatic writing. I will shoot some material with strong symbolic meaning, and then break them up, and see what kind of patterns will be produced with the random collision of thoughts. This cannot be copied. This is also the most direct art of art creation process. Through these pictorial symbols, I can express myself. I think that the more advanced humans evolve, there should be more advanced ways of expression. Although simple language is good, it is always less interesting.
