Integrating Art and Language

2021 PaperOne™ Newspaper Handwriting Contest Activity

It is not unusual to sing a poem into a song. But have you ever imagined transforming a painting into a dance? Writing a piece of music as a character? Editing an essay into a novel? It is the beauty of combining all kinds of art at all times and in all places to blend different forms of art and media with sparks of novelty shining, new experiences brought, and an unprecedented realm created.

In November 2021, under the sponsorship of PaperOne, a copy paper brand, Dr. Chua Chee Lay, Senior Language and Culture Expert in Singapore, Personal Mandarin Trainer of Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, Chairman of the Writing Group of the National Promotion of Chinese Language Learning Committee, and Expert of the Global Artist Committee (Literature) of Asia Art Association and Suzlee Ibrahim, the Dean of the Faculty of Fine Art, National Academy of Arts & Culture/ ASWARA, Kuala Lumpur, MALAYSIA will share "Fusion Art is Cool" via video with students affected by the epidemic.

The ‘PaperOne Newspaper Handwriting Contest’ officially launched in Singapore on 15 June 2021, marking the first time it is held outside Greater China since its debut in 1996.

The youth contest is organised and sponsored by Yangcheng Evening News, a top-tier Chinese newspaper that rates as one of the world’s highest-circulating titles. Since its inception, the contest has involved a large number of primary and secondary schools, parents and junior readers, as well as more than two million teenagers from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.

The Singapore edition is organised by Asia Art Association and sponsored by PaperOne, the flagship brand of Asia Pacific Resources International Holdings Ltd. (APRIL). Similar contests will take place in countries such as Japan, South Korea, Russia, Hungary, Ecuador and Laos. More than 100,000 people around the globe are expected to participate.

In holding the contest in China, Yangcheng Evening News enables students to express themselves by developing a handwritten newspaper, complete with writing, design and layout. They hope to promote reading, critical thinking and writing among students at a time when electronic devices have become prevalent.

The Singapore contest will mirror these aims. The theme, "My Singapore Dream", will help students garner a deeper understanding of Singapore’s history and achievements. In the process, students will be exposed to social issues and encouraged to express their views on Singapore’s future and their sense of national identity.
