ABOUT

Quek Yong Siu, a poet, a composer and a columnist, previously worked as a lecturer at the School of Electronics and Info-comm of the ITE College West of Singapore. He was one of the flutists in People’s Association Chinese Orchestra. He learnt music composition from Mr Ma Wen, Mr Shen Bing Guang and Mr Leong Yoon Peng. He also learnt conducting from Mdm Li Hao. Currently he is the advisor of the Association of Composers (Singapore), vice-president of the Musicians Society of Singapore, music director cam conductor of the Foozhou Clan Association Choir and Chui Huay Lim Galaxy Chinese Instrumental ensemble, president of the World Chinese Writers Association of Exchange Inc, honorary president of May Poetry Society, committee member of the Writers Association of Singapore, Author-in-Resident for secondary schools and junior colleges, honorary president of the Fen Yang Gou Clan Association and former guest DJ of the Radio FM 100.3, FM 95.8 and Radio International.

He was invited in Global Artist Committee of Asian Art Association in April 2021.

His published works includes 6 poems collections, 1 prose collection, 1 song book and 1 music commentary. His poem collection “The Story of Chopsticks” had won the Highly Commended Award in the Book Festival organized by Singapore Government. Many of his poems were selected and included in the text books of the secondary schools and universities and poems dictionaries in Singapore and overseas.

Music

Mr. Quek was awarded twice for his music composition in the competition called “Our Songs”. His music composition includes various types of vocal and instrumental music. He was the conductor of the Juexin Orchestra, Red-cross Chinese Orchestra and National Theatre Mixed Orchestra for more than 20 years. He is often invited as a judge for writing competitions and music competitions in Singapore and Overseas.
He has hosted 4 concerts on his song compositions in Singapore and Beijing. His compositions are well received and recognized by the singers and audience and they were sung frequently at local and overseas concert.
