PLATINUM

Seongbin Yoon (Korean)

The piece is inspired by the world heritage “Aldabra”, a beautiful native atoll. Although Aldabra is protected by UNESCO, some of the tortoises struggle from ocean trash. Having conconcted an idea that presents the sustainable method of expressing the environmental problem, I used only recyclable material to create a wearable dress. This shows that recyclable material can be used as a resource to make refined, Ready-to-wear clothes that people can wear in their daily lives. I hope the fashion industry starts to actively use more of these reusable materials to reduce the massive amount of waste attacking world heritage.

Standing by Namhansanseong // Built in the 17th century, Namhansanseong (Fortress), located in Gyeonggi-do province, Korea, was designed as a temporary refuge for the city during emergency situations. While the gates and walls are surrounded by peaceful nature now, my mind conjures up scenes from history. I see bright skies and vibrant trees but also imagine the scenes of battle, of weapons clanging. I am awed at the memories Namhansanseong has and at the sheer number of people who have touched these posts before me. The title comes from the mindset that I want to “stand by” its historical role despite its secondary nature. (Arteast, KR)

The Erechtheion of Athens // This artwork portraits the sculpture of the goddess at the Erechtheion of Athens. Viewing down from the temple, the modern city of Athens looks advanced and well repaired. In comparison , the statues , which due to all the history they had gone through , are eroded and partially disrepair. Thousands of year before, the temple and sculptures were built as a protection for the people of Athens, and even now, they still stood there indestructibly and elegantly. (Tree Art, SG)

Roaming in Dunhuang // The Dunhuang Mogao Caves are not only a world cultural heritage site but have also been inscribed on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. Specifically, it has been included in three projects: "Ancient Chinese Calligraphy Art," "Chinese Traditional Opera," and the "Silk Road." This further demonstrates the importance and value of Dunhuang Mogao Caves as a cultural heritage site, not only in China but also around the world. However, due to the passage of time and natural factors, these cave paintings and sculptures have suffered varying degrees of damage and destruction, making it imperative for more people to pay attention to and protect them. They are treasures and cultural legacies of all humanity. (Tree Art, SG)

Three-story Stone Pagoda in Yongjangsa Valle // The three-story stone pagoda was constructed in Korea during the Shila Kingdom about the year 700. It is renowned for its blending beauty with the surrounding natural beauty. The fact that it is perched on a mountain rock adds to its uniqueness. Even though the architecture is outdated, it nevertheless has its own charm, making it spectacular to simply observe. It is situated in the Unesco-designated city of Kyungjoo, which is home to numerous priceless buildings including the ruins of the Shila Dynasty's former capital. I simply want to convey balance between the pagoda and the serenity of the surrounding landscape. (Arteast, KR)

The Great Wall Of China // I painted "The Great Wall Of China" because it's historical, it's been there for centuries. After all the years, the building itself is still visible today. I used a dry brush and gently tap on the canvas to make the trees and also the leaves. And used the palette knife to make the mountains, and used normal paint brushes for the bridge and used thin brush for the details of the Great Wall. The reason why I chose the trees to be orange and red is because I want the viewer to feel comfortable, the colour represents the feeling of autumn fall, cold and relaxing. (Tree Art, SG)

On Winsor & Newton Acrylic Canvas-textured A3 Size (297mm x 420 mm) 300 gsm paper, this piece of acrylic painting illustrates Japan's UNESCO World Heritage site: the Itsukushima Shinto Shrine. With a pastel green palette, a dreamy mountainscape is established in the distance, coupled with streaks of cirrus clouds spanning across the energetic azure sky. This sentiment is also evoked from the orange-yellow reflection of the Torii gate on the navy-blue waves. Akin to koi fish, the reflection depicts the revitalising spiritual energy of the Itsukushima-jinja, in which its iconic floating Torii gate is centralised in perfect harmony with nature.

These two drawings represent my deepest passions and interests. The first one is a depiction of Mount Everest, the highest mountain on Earth. As an adventurous person, I have always dreamt of climbing it, overcoming one of the world's greatest challenges, and becoming one of the rare challengers who has reached the summit. Although I have yet to achieve this dream, I drew it out as a way to bring it one step closer to reality. The second one is a sketch completely drawn based on my memories of exploring my beloved hometown, Penang. I used only one pencil and kept the drawing black and white to express the island's history and ancient taste fully. This is a small island where I have spent 95% of my life. Although it is small, there is so much to explore, and every time I venture out, I discover something new and impressive. In this drawing, I captured a scene from the famous Georgetown area in Penang, where I was fully drawn into the vintage architecture. I couldn't wait to draw it out when I saw it for the first time, and it became a way for me to preserve and celebrate the beauty of my hometown.

Yuanmingyuan The main building of my work is a large-scale royal garden in the Qing Dynasty in China: it is called "Yuanmingyuan". Yuanmingyuan brings together the most exquisite skills of Chinese and foreign gardening, but unfortunately it was burned in 1860. In the painting, I stand the Yuanmingyuan in the contrast of the morning glow and auspicious clouds. The hand of the goddess falling from the sky is reshaping its lost part of the land. In the bright golden light, this human treasure known as the "Garden of Ten Thousand Gardens" seems to restore its past demeanour. In addition, the flying dragon surrounds the sky It adds a strong Chinese demeanour. Maybe one day it can really be shown to the world again. (Let Colour Soar, SG)
